New IGS reference frame: IGS20

The IGS products are computed on the new reference frame IGS20 since November 27, 2022 (GPS week 2238). Given that the weekly analysis of the SIRGAS reference frame is based on the IGS products (i.e. final orbits, Earth orientation parameters, satellite clock offsets), the weekly station positions of SIRGAS refer also to the IGS20 starting with the GPS week 2238. The determination, use, and maintenance of the IGS20 as the IGS reference frame, as well as its relationship with the ITRF2020 and the previous IGS14/IGb14 are presented in the IGS messages [IGSMAIL-8238] [IGSMAIL-8256] [IGSMAIL-8282].

The new SIRGAS site is hosted by the Pan-American Institute for Geography and History (PAIGH), but the maintenance continues being a responsibility of the SIRGAS President and Vice-president. https://sirgas.ipgh.org/ contains exactly the same information and data like www.sirgas.org, so that the SIRGAS users can assumed this transition smoothly. The web site www.sirgas.org continues in operation under the responsibility of DGFI-TUM. It now acts as the portal of the SIRGAS Analysis Centre operated by the DGFI-TUM, who is also responsible for the IGS RNAAC SIRGAS.

New name for SIRGAS

The acronym of SIRGAS is changed to Geodetic Reference System for the Americas, as the objectives of SIRGAS are extended to the determination of a unified physical reference system for gravimetry, physical heights and geoid. This change is in agreement with the recommendations arisen from the International Workshop for the Implementation of the Global Geodetic Reference Frame in Latin America, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in September 2019.

New SIRGAS analysis centre for the neutral atmosphere

CIMA (Centro de Ingeniería in Mendoza, Argentina) acts as the new SIRGAS analysis centre for the neutral atmosphere. Based on the tropospheric Zenith Path Delays (ZPD) delivered by the SIRGAS processing centres within the weekly processing of the SIRGAS reference stations, CIMA provides hourly combined troposphere estimates of high-reliability for each SIRGAS station. This analysis centre is operated by the Facultad de Ingeniería of the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (UNCuyo, Mendoza, Argentina) in cooperation with the Facultad de Ingeniería of the Universidad Juan Agustín Maza (Mendoza, Argentina) and with support of the Argentinean Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET). The corresponding activities are conducted by María Laura Mateo, María Virginia Mackern, María Fernanda Camisay, Paola Morichetti, Patricia Rosell, and Gerardo Granados.

New SIRGAS processing centre

In the frame of the Symposium SIRGAS2019, the SIRGAS experimental processing centre operated by the Universidad de Santiago de Chile became an official SIRGAS processing centre. The weekly solutions delivered by this processing centre are now combined with the solutions provided by the other processing centres to generate the station coordiantes of the SIRGAS reference network. The acronym of this new processing centre is USC, its weekly solutions contain about 105 stations, and the cooresponsing activities are conducted by José Antonio Tarrío Mosquera, Marcelo Silva Caverlotti, José Luis Borcosque Díaz, Bernardo Andres Barraza López, and Fernando Isla.

New velocity model VEMOS2015

A new SIRGAS Velocity Model (VEMOS2015) was inferred from GNSS (GPS+GLONASS) measurements gained after the strong earthquakes occurred in 2010 in Chile and Mexico. It is based exclusively on the multi-year solution SIR15P01, which comprises 456 continuously operating GNSS stations covering a five years period from March 14, 2010 to April 11, 2015. VEMOS2015 covers the region from 55°S, 110°W to 32°N, 35°W with a spatial resolution of 1° x 1°. The average prediction uncertainty is ±0.6 mm/a in the north-south direction and ±1.2 mm/a in the east-west direction. The maximum is ±9 mm/a in the Maule deformation zone (Chile) while the minimum values of about ±0.1 mm/a occur in the stable eastern part of the South American plate. New multi-year solution SIR15P01

The IGS RNAAC SIR (IGS Regional Network Associate Analysis Centre for SIRGAS) under the responsibility of DGFI-TUM (Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut, Technische Universität München) released recently a new multi-year solution for the SIRGAS reference frame. This solution, called SIR15P01, was computed using GNSS (GPS+GLONASS) observations gained after the strong earthquakes occurred in 2010 in Chile and Mexico. It covers a five years period from 2010-03-14 to 2015-04-11. SIR15P01 includes positions and velocities of 303 SIRGAS reference stations and 153 additional stations, which are considered to improve the station distribution towards a post-seismic surface velocity model. SIR15P01 refers to the IGb08 frame, epoch 2013.0. The averaged RMS precision for the station positions at the reference epoch is ±0.7 mm in the north-south component, ±0.9 mm in the east-west component, and ±3.5 mm in the height. The averaged RMS precision for the station velocities is ±0.5 mm/a in the north-south component, ±0.8 mm/a in the east-west component, and ±1.6 mm/a in the vertical component. Dominican Republic: a new SIRGAS member

The Dominican Republic became a new SIRGAS member in March 2015. This procedure started in the frame of the "School on Reference Systems, Crustal Deformation and Ionosphere Monitoring" held in Panama City in October 2013. This was a capacity building activity supported by the project "Monitoring crustal deformation and the ionosphere by GPS in the Caribbean" sponsored by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) through the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI), the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), and the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA). This School was also supported by the Pan-American Institute for Geography and History (PAIGH). Thanks to the contact established in that opportunity, representatives of the Dominican Republic participated in the SIRGAS Symposia 2013 and 2014. As a result of this approach, we welcome the Dominican Republic as a new SIRGAS member and announce that the Symposium SIRGAS 2015 will take place in Santo Domingo under the coordination of the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU).

Experimental Processing Centre become official

The SIRGAS Experimental Processing Centre CNPDG-UNA (Centro Nacional de Procesamiento de Datos GNSS, Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica) became Official Processing Centre according to a directive given by the SIRGAS Directing Council (see Resolution No. 1 of October 26, 2013). From January 1, 2014, the individual solutions generated by this Centre are combined with the solutions provided by the existing Centres (CEPGE, CPAGS-LUZ, DGFI, IBGE, IGAC, IGM-Cl, IGN-Ar, INEGI, SGM-Uy) to produce the final solutions of the SIRGAS reference frame. This processing centre was operative until December 31, 2018.

Experimental SIRGAS Caster

Under the umbrella of the project SIRGAS in Real Time, a service called Experimental SIRGAS Caster has been implemented with the main purpose of publishing GNSS data in real time using NTRIP. This caster is hosted by the Laboratorio del Grupo de Geodesia Satelital de Rosario, at the Universidad Nacional de Rosario, Argentina. The identification of the caster is IP: 200.3.123.65 Port: 2101. The data access is free of charge; however, users are requested to fill a registration form out, where they accept the terms of use, and apply for a username and a password to have access to the data. The registration form is available at www.fceia.unr.edu.ar/gps/caster. At the moment, observations of some permanent GNSS stations in the region, as well as satellite ephemeris and clock corrections are published in real time. With this, (real time) applications based on relative positioning or on precise point positioning can be performed.Operators of SIRGAS-CON stations or SIRGAS National Data Centres interested in making their data through this caster available are welcome. The corresponding registration form is also available at www.fceia.unr.edu.ar/gps/caster.

Joint iniciative of PAIGH, SIRGAS, CP-IDEA, and GeoSUR to support the development of the SDI of the Americas

During the 44 Meeting of the PAIGH Directing Council, hold in Buenos Aires between November 14 and 16, 2012, a joint action plan for the period 2013-2015 was designed to strengthen, harmonize and accelerate the development of the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) for the Americas. SIRGAS is responsible for providing the fundamental reference data for the SDI following the guidance of the International Association of Geodesy. CP-IDEA shall promote the SDI implementation and GeoSUR shall facilitate its accessibility and applicability. Complementary, PAIGH will continue supporting the activities carried out by these three organizations. The corresponding details are summarized in the document “Plan de Acción Conjunto 2013 – 2015 para Acelerar el Desarrollo de las Infraestructura de Datos Espaciales de las Américas”, available at www.ipgh.org

Actualization of the IGS08 Reference Frame

The IGS released a new version of the IGS08 Reference Frame called IGb08. Since many of the IGS08 stations have been affected by discontinuities since 2009.5, they are now unusable for operational reference frame alignments. In particular, the IGS08 core network has dropped to about 50 usable stations recently, leaving large holes in South America, Africa, and Eastern Asia. This situation led IGS to propose an update of IGS08, called IGb08. It mainly includes new sets of coordinates for 33 IGS08 stations having been affected by position discontinuities since 2009.5, and 3 new stations co-located with decommissioned IGS08 stations. The IGb08 Reference Frame replaces the IGS08 Reference Frame since October 7, 2012, GPS week 1709. More details in [IGSMAIL 6663].

Improvement of the IGS station coverage in Latin America

After the strong earthquake of February 2010 in the Chilean Region Maule, a huge percentage of existing IGS reference frame stations in South America suffered an irreparable discontinuity in their time series. Thereby, the reliability of the recently launched ITRF2008 and IGS08 reference frames decreased considerably in South America and the affected stations are no longer usable as a basis for the GNSS data analysis or to guarantee the long-term stability of the ITRF in this region. Keeping in mind the achievements reached within the regional reference frame SIRGAS and the planned second reprocessing campaign of the IGS global network, a set of continuously operating SIRGAS stations was proposed to be included in this reprocessing with the main objective of improving the IGS station coverage in Latin America. Initially, the IGS Regional Associate Analysis Centre for SIRGAS (IGS RNAAC SIR), with the support of the national organizations responsible for the reference frames in the Latin American countries, made a selection of about 70 SIRGAS stations satisfying the IGS requirements. This selection was evaluated by the IGS Reference Frame Working Group, and after some interaction with the IGS Global Analysis Centres, it was decided to include 40 SIRGAS stations not only in the IGS reprocessing but also in the present routine IGS processing. SIRGAS provided the IGS data centres with the metadata and all existing observations (historical data) of the selected stations by the end of January 2012. Present measurements (since the beginning of 2012) of the operational stations are directly provided by the responsible Latin American agencies to the IGS. Election of SIRGAS President and Vice-president for the period 2011 - 2015

In the frame of the SIRGAS2011 meeting, a General Assembly of the SIRGAS Directing Council was carried out. This is the main body of SIRGAS and defines the official policies and recommendations of SIRGAS. It is composed by one representative of each member country, one of IAG and one of PAIGH. According to the bylaws, it meets every four years to elect the SIRGAS authorities, which correspond to the SIRGAS President and Vice-president. In this opportunity, Claudio Brunini (Universidad Nacional de la Plata, Argentina) and Laura Sánchez (Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut, Germany) were re-elected for a second term, from 2011 to 2015. The corresponding details are summarized in the SIRGAS Newsletter No. 16.

SIRGAS2011 General Meeting and Third IAG-IPGH-SIRGAS School in Reference Systems

The SIRGAS2011 General Meeting was held in Heredia, Costa Rica, between August 8 and 10, 2011. In the week before, from August 3 to 5, the Third IAG-PAIGH-SIRGAS School on Reference Systems took place. The SIRGAS meeting and the School were hosted by the Escuela de Topografía, Catastro y Geodesia of the Universidad Nacional (ETCG-UNA). New multi-year solution for the SIRGAS reference frame SIR11P01

The new multi-year solution SIR11P01 of the SIRGAS-CON network is included. It covers the time span between 2000-01-02 (GPS week 1043) and 2011-04-16 (GPS week 1631). It comprises positions and constant velocities for 230 stations referring to the ITRF2008, epoch 2005.0. The final precision was estimated to be ±1,0 mm (horizontal) and ±2,4 mm (vertical) for the station positions, and ±0,7 mm/a (horizontal) and ±1,1 mm/a (vertical) for the constant velocities. New IGS reference frame: IGS08

The IGS products are computed on the new reference frame IGS08 since April 17, 2011 (GPS week 1632). Given that the weekly analysis of the SIRGAS-CON network is based on the IGS products (i.e. final orbits, Earth orientation parameters, satellite clock offsets), the weekly station positions of SIRGAS refer also to the IGS08 starting with the GPS week 1632. The determination, use, and maintenance of IGS08 as reference frame, as well as its relationship with the ITRF2008 and the IGS05 are presented in the IGS messages [IGSMAIL-6354], [IGSMAIL-6355], and [IGSMAIL-6356].

Guyana: a new SIRGAS member

Guyana, following the SIRGAS bylaws, applied to become a member country of SIRGAS. The application was carried out by the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC), responsible for land administration and surveying in this country. Since all the requirements were satisfied, Guyana is a SIRGAS member since April 1, 2011.

Experimental Processing Centres become official

The SIRGAS Experimental Processing Centres Instituto Geográfico Nacional de Argentina (IGN-Ar) and Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía of Mexico (INEGI) became Official Procesing Centres according to a directive given by the SIRGAS Executive Committee. From January 1, 2011, the individual solutions generated by these Centres are combined with the solutions provided by the existing Centres (CEPGE, CIMA, CPAGS-LUZ, DGFI, IBGE, IGAC and SGM-Uy) to produce the final solutions of the SIRGAS-CON network. The participation of these new Processing Centres increases the redundacy in the network processing, improving the control quality of the SIRGAS products.

2010 General Meeting of SIRGAS and Second IAG-PAIGH-SIRGAS School on Reference Systems

The SIRGAS 2010 General Meeting was carried out together with the 42 Meeting of the PAIGH Directing Council in November 11 and 12 in Lima, Peru. In the three days prior to the SIRGAS Meeting (November 8 - 10), the Second IAG-PAIGH-SIRGAS School on Reference Systems took place. All the events were hosted by the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) of Peru

New multi-year solution for the SIRGAS reference frame SIR10P01

The new multi-year solution SIR10P01 of the SIRGAS-CON network is included. It covers the time span between January 2, 2000 (GPS week 1043) and June 5, 2010 (GPS week 1586). It refers to the ITRF2008 at epoch 2005,0 and provides positions and velocities for 183 SIRGAS-CON stations. The precision of its coordinates at reference epoch is estimated to be ~±0,5 mm in the horizontal component and ~±0,9 mm in the height. The precision of horizontal and vertical velocities is about ±0,2 mm/a and ±0,4 mm/a, respectively.

Experimental Processing Centres become official

The SIRGAS Experimental Processing Centres Instituto Geográfico Militar of Ecuador (IGM-Ec), Servicio Geográfico Militar of Uruguay (SGM-Uy) and Laboratorio de Geodesia Física y Satelital de la Universidad del Zulia (LGFS-LUZ, Venezuela) became Official Procesing Centres according to a directive given by the SIRGAS Executive Committee. From January 1, 2010, the individual solutions generated by these three Centres are combined with the solutions provided by the existing Centres (CIMA, DGFI, IBGE and IGAC) to produce the final solutions of the SIRGAS-CON network. The participation of these new Processing Centres in the network analysis allows to include each regional station in three different solutions, improving the control quality of the SIRGAS products. The processing centre LGFS-LUZ was operative until February 9, 2019.

SIRGAS School on Reference Systems

As an initiative of the Working Group II SIRGAS (SIRGAS-WGII: Geocentric Datum), the first SIRGAS School on Reference Systems takes place between July 13 and 17 in Bogotá, Colombia. Its central objective is to strengthen the fundamental concepts associated with the Geodesy of Reference. It is oriented to producers and users of precise geodetic data in the SIRGAS member countries. This School is sponsored by the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH), the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), Instituto Geográfico Agustín Codazzi (IGAC), Universidad Nacional de La Plata, and Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut (DGFI).

The SIRGAS web page is moved from IGM-Argentina to www.sirgas.org. It keeps the same design introduced by IGM-Argentina and IBGE in the previous web sites. A new section about the SIRGAS Continuously Observing Network (SIRGAS-CON) is implemented. The SIRGAS Vicepresident, Laura Sánchez from Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut (DGFI), is responsible for maintaining the new SIRGAS web site.

December, 2004

The SIRGAS Vicepresident, Eduardo Lauría, assumed the maintenance and modernization of the SIRGAS web site and it is moved from IBGE to the Instituto Geográfico Militar of Argentina. This new site offered interactive tools to easily find the SIRGAS95 and SIRGAS2000 coordinates for desired stations as well as to get station velocities from the VEMOS model. New sections corresponding to the SIRGAS Working Groups were introduced. The timely presentation of the SIRGAS Reports through the web site was continued.

November, 2002

The first version of the SIRGAS web page is designed, implemented, and kept by the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística, IBGE, affiliation of the current SIRGAS President, Luiz Paulo Souto Fortes. This web site described the objectives and structure of SIRGAS, included the new SIRGAS Bylaws, and contained the main SIRGAS products: SIRGAS95 and SIRGAS2000 coordinates and the VEMOS model. Through this web site the routinely issue of the SIRGAS Newsletters was established.

October, 2002

With the adoption of the SIRGAS Bylaws in October 2002, SIRGAS President and Vicepresident begin the design and maintainance of the SIRGAS web site.
